Stress Less by Keeping Your Life Balanced …..Pt 2

stressed bible verses

A very Important aspect of a Balanced Life is Faith, Now I am not here to debate over who’s Faith is right or Wrong, I happen to be Christian , You may be another religion but I do believe that for everyone there is a something bigger looking out for us. For me , It is the the Lord. My Spiritual Faith is very important in keeping my Life balanced in many ways, If I am not spiritually balanced I loose balance in my body and mind, so to me having my Faith fully nourished on a day to day, moment by moment renewing I would loose my whole balance in Life. Without Faith , I would not be able to function at all.

The Lord helps relieve Stress in so many ways that I had no idea of , but as I have learned through the years has helped me become the person I am today, and I am growing more and more each day into the person God wants me to be for him. It is all about the Lord, for I live for him, I live to Glorify his name and to speak his word to the next generations, that is what it is all about to me, Life has never been the same , it has become a beautiful Journey. I am not saying there isn’t struggles, I fully believe that God puts me into certain struggles so that I can keep my Faith growing and learn from each one, so that I can then help others. That is what struggles are all about, but you have to keep the Faith and Trust in the Lord during those struggles and issues in your Life and always remain Grateful and Thankful to the Lord no matter what is going on, for he always gives you a way out, he never leaves me, and I learn and go on to teach my mess into a message for someone else who may be experiencing the same struggle I may have experienced a year ago.

Sometimes I hear the Lord in different ways, I may not hear him in a audiable voice but I may hear him through his word and the peace I feel in my heart is when I know that is the answer for me, It is just a “Knowing ” in my spirit that the direction I am going is the right one. Sometimes the answers may come by a door closing but a window opening instead, there are many ways I hear the Lord but I have to have the communication in prayer open all the time to be able to hear from him and learn.

Learning through the Word of God to me, has relieved so much Stress in my life over the years, I used to be so overwhelmed every day of my Life, I did not understand that God was in control, I was the strong willed one and was going to be the one to fix my Life without God’s help and that just led to confusion and stress all day long. It have become so bad that I had to see a doctor for my anxiety and then I wasn’t eating properly and I felt horrible, I couldn’t concentrate, I couldn’t think properly , I was a mess. It was the Lord, and his Living Word that has become my strength to finally rely on him, not on my own understanding . I had to go to the Lord and just surrender it all to him, I had to submit myself and give it all to him, cast my cares as they say!!!! and that I did. It was not easy for I had grown up to rely on myself, for I had a very disfunctial life for a long time and I only had myself to rely on, and get through things, Oh, if I had only known about Jesus so much earlier in my Life but that is not how he wanted it, he called me by name when He was ready for me, and I answered and I accepted him into my heart and asked for forgiveness of my sins ….Wow, what a breaking point in my life that day, the Lord was now living within me. I didn’t realize at first what a powerful and amazing thing that was to have the Lord within me.

But you are not living the life of the flesh, you are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]. But if anyone does not possess the [Holy] Spirit of Christ, he is none of His [he does not belong to Christ, is not truly a child of God].  Romans 8:9

That is one powerful Scripture, I am a child of God!!!!!  That right there just brings me relief , for I no longer have to go through anything by myself, I have the Lord with me and his Promises all the time, and that is one of the biggest stress relievers there is …..

Psalm 23 is packed with Stress Relief, and remember now, that you don’t just have to pray to be able to talk with God, you can talk to God just like your talking with a friend, I talk to God all day long. I ask him for Wisdom every moment for almost everything I do. It has become a norm for me now, and It feels good to be able to feel that Peace in my heart when I know that I have made the right decision on something , it may be something small or it may be a huge issue, but I always talk to him and ask for Wisdom.

God has taught me so much  in the renewing of my Mind daily. I now trust God with all my needs, I obey God’s instruction on Rest, I let God be my defender , I have learned to Grieve to Heal, I trust God to guide me, etc…..

The Lord has given me such Peace that the Joy has been risen in my life again, Stress had gone down….

psalm 23

Psalm 23

The Lord is my Shepard, I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my Soul.

He guides me along the right paths for his names sake

Even though I walk through the darkest valley

I will fear no Evil,

for you are with me.

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely your goodness and love will follow me, all the days of my Life.

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

That scripture is packed with words and Affirmations of Trust and Stress Relief from the One and Only Savior.

Finding and deepening your Faith can help in balancing your Life, without a deep Spiritual Connection then how are you supposed to Balance the other aspects of your life? Talk to God, and He will Listen, then you go on, and Trust and Feel that Peace come over you even in the hardest times of Life, You can feel the Peace from the Lord.  Just be…….and Listen!!!!!

How 2013 has Changed me Forever for 2014 and Beyond!!!!

live life to theFirst and Foremost, Happy New Year to Everyone!!!!

I did not sit and write this out, I am just for the first post of the year, going to write it as I feel it!!!!  Taking that Jump of Faith  I guess you could say……Wow, 2013 was one of the hardest years I have ever had. I went through so much, and there is no need to get into all the details of what I went through because it is the Outcome of what happened that is what is so important. I was living in the most toxic , negative world anyone could have ever been living in, and maybe living isn’t the proper word, I was existing ….I was so stressed out, I let everything that was going on, and yes there were some serious issues going on but I let them all get to me that I ended up having a few Anxiety attacks, but now I look back and even though they were tough to go through, I am so glad I did or I would not be here with such High Hopes for the year of 2014 and how much I have changed and what I have in store not just for myself but for so many other people who may be going thru just a smidgen of what I went through last year, I am here to help. My blog is going to be turned into  a full-blown website with courses, e-books , Facebook Support groups, and so much more. My main topic of course is going to be helping people deal with Stress, and that Yes, you can still live a peaceful life even with the worst issues going on around you, Who Knew???  Guess what?  God Knew!!!!  That is one aspect of 2013 that I am going to really be reflecting on this year and that is learning how to get out of anything as long as you have the Lord by your side. The Lord saved me and Blessed me in so many ways this past year and now it is my turn to give back to those who are suffering and think there is no Hope!!!! There is always Hope!!!!

There are so many avenues of Stress that I will be covering this year on my site and blogs, and I am working with some awesome people now getting it all together so I can have this up and running this month, I thought it would have been up by now but all good things come in their own good time, In the meantime, I will be blogging away at least 2 days a week, maybe even more, and it all wont be just Stress and how to deal with it, there are so many great ways of dealing with Stress and I will cover as many that were taught to me, and I even have some Meditation coming in as well. We all now that when our bodies are full of stress, that they are completely unbalanced,so I had to make a lot of changes there as well too, I have changed it all, my eating, my thinking, my spirit, it all has to balance together to make you  feel whole, and that is what is going to be so wonderful this year as I grow my website, I will be discussing how I learned how to eat better, or Healthier, I went All Natural, and yes, I went to Oils, how exciting was that for me, I still am learning so much about Oils but they also played a Huge part in helping me with my stress and so many other issues pertaining to my Health.

I have gone from buying soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent to making it all myself, and Yes, I will be incorporating all of that wonderful DIY into my site as well.

So you can see why I am so excited for the 2014!!!  I have so much to share with so many people, and I am planning on growing bigger and bigger , I am being taught Reiki, Herbs, taking , took courses on Coaching,Mindful Stress Reduction, and so much more…….. Wow, are you getting as excited as I am.

The bottom line here, is that I went from the bottom of the pit, and I FINALLY SURRENDED MY LIFE AND ITS TROUBLES TO THE LORD, and with that came so many Blessings. I am so Hopeful, and I still have so much to do when it comes to the site and what I am exactly going to be doing, but I have the Lord right next to me, and this is my Year, 2014 is the Year that I give back. There was a reason why I went through so much , and yes, I could be sitting here crying over it and having a huge pity party but that would be the most selfish thing I could ever do, I am changing my mindset from Victim to Winner!!! The Lord has Graced me with his Mercy and Salvation and I am here now to show others that they too can get through anything for the Lord is our Rock, He never changes and he is always there for us.

The Lord is my fort where I can enter and be safe; no one can follow me in and slay me. He is a rugged mountain where I hide; he is my Savior, a rock where none can reach me, and a tower of safety. He is my shield. He is like the strong horn of a mighty fighting bull.  Psalm 18:2

So , I know this was not the best post I have ever written but this one comes from the Heart, In 2013 I found out that What I  think determines the way I feel, and What I feel determines the way I act. I no longer hold that victim mentality , I know learn from all I have been thru for the Lord takes the Bad and turns it into Good for those who Believe. Do you Believe?  Do you have Faith and Trust in the Lord? Well, I know I have complete 100% Faith and Trust in the Lord, for I  have seen what he has done within me, I am a new person, and this New Person is ready for the New Year of 2014 and I am going to make it one of the Best Years ever, and the only way I can see it being one of the best Years ever is by sharing with everyone , serving, and Helping as many people as I can.

I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11

That is what he has told me, I went from feeling like I had no future at all, to hope and excitement that is just beaming from my heart, and I can’t wait to see what the Lord has planned for me to share with the World!!!!

I have learned how to live a Balanced Life through my Mind, Body and Spirit and I have full intentions of sharing everything I was taught with everyone who wants to learn how to go from existing to Living a Life of full of Hope and Love, there isn’t a day that goes by that I am not grateful for another day to learn and serve the Lord in anyway he leads me too.

life is to short to be at war

his is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.  Psalm 118:24

Overcoming the Stress in Your Life Through the Word

Anxiety, worry and tension are some of the most destructive forces we can face. They sap our strength and slowly undermine our faith, keeping us from maturing in the Lord (Luke 8:14). If we are to grow in our relationship with Jesus, we must discover God’s plan for freedom from the crippling cycle of stress.

what bible says about worry and anxiety

Stress’ Source of Power

Anxiety, worry and tension occur when we face a situation and choose to rely upon our own strength rather than upon God and His Word. Maybe we have forgotten that God can handle any problem. Or perhaps we let our carnal nature persuade us that we can do a better job handling the situation ourselves.

By doing this, we are actually engaging in a subtle form of idolatry. Consider the first commandment God spoke to Moses: “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3, Deut. 5:7). In other words, we should trust God alone.

But when we choose to lean on our own understanding instead God’s promises we are placing ourselves, or the overwhelming situations we are facing, “before” the Lord. The moment we step into that place of self-reliance, we open our emotions to a flood of anxiety, worry and tension. But there is hope and freedom for anyone caught in this snare.

Breaking Free

God wants us to be free from worry. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). But to enter that rest we have to cut off stress’ source of power: our unbelief (Heb. 3:19).

In one of the greatest passages of Scripture, Jesus confronts our futile anxiety (Matt. 6:25-34). He tells us to look at how God feeds the birds of the air and arrays the lilies of the field. How much more will He care for his children?

Then Jesus says, “Do not be anxious” about the things of this world. Instead, give God the proper priority in our lives “Seek first the kingdom and His righteousness” and He will take care of the rest.

As we grow in our understanding of God’s love for us, we will soon realize that nothing in this world can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38, 39) … no financial burden, family crisis, job situation, sickness … nothing in the past and nothing in the future. Because He cares so deeply for us, we can cast our anxiety upon Him (1 Peter 5:7)

Casting Our Cares On Him

Every day will bring new opportunities to cast our cares upon Him. One of the best ways we can do this is by replacing our worry and tension with prayer and thanksgiving. “Be anxious for nothing,” the Bible says, “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Phil 4:6). This command is followed by a wonderful promise: “And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:7).

It is also important to begin incorporating God’s pattern for rest into your own life. You should set aside one day a week as the Lord’s day taking a break from your work routine so you can enter into His rest.

As we learn to take God at His Word, walk in His favor and trust in His strength, our worries will melt away, replaced by a precious peace that is known only by those who rest in God’s loving arms.

As You Pray

Are you walking in His peace? Or are you weighed down by anxiety, worry and tension? There’s a simple solution: tell God you are sorry for not believing His promises, begin to give Him first place in your life, and then enter into His rest.

Take a few moments right now to enter into the rest God has for you: “Father, forgive me for my unbelief. I no longer want to trust in my own strength. Thank You for caring so deeply for me. I give You all my worries. I know I can trust You with these situations. I accept Your rest. Please teach me how to walk in Your rest each and every day. In Jesus’ name. Amen”

God’s Word On Anxiety

“Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life’s span? And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; thy do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these. But if God so arrays the grass of the field, which is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more do so for you, O men of little faith? Do not be anxious then saying What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘With what shall we clothe ourselves?’ For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not b anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:26-34)

Toxic Emotions , How to get rid of them!!!!

This one Article written by Joyce Meyer and the scriptures that back it up have helped me out of some really tough depressed times in my Life, I hope that you can get out of this article what I did, Study the scriptures she leaves for you, Journal them with your daily life and what they look like to you and what your going through, Personalize the scriptures with your name, remember them, apply them to your daily Life and you will see changes. You have to seek the Lord and his Word, for change to take place , it must begin with your Heart and your Spirit. I copied this article for all of you who are going through those Toxic Emotions that you think you can’t get rid of when really You can, replace them with Positive thoughts, take these thoughts and let them lead you , take the scriptures and let God lead you. It can be done, for I was the most negative person around with so many issues and now, I still have issues , but I have a grateful attitude and Positive emotions and thoughts daily. Give it a try and spend some time with the Lord, see where it can take you and never ever give up Hope……Lisa

We all have emotions, and they’re here to stay. I believe one of the main goals of every believer should be emotional stability. We should seek God to learn how to manage our emotions and not allow them to manage us. An excerpt from the definition I found in the dictionary states that emotions are “to excite and to move out.” Think about this: You’re out shopping for a specific item you’re in need of. You’ve made a commitment to the Lord to get out of debt. You’ve promised Him to tithe and give offerings as He directs. You’ve agreed to really watch your spending and not purchase things you don’t need. But while shopping, you discover that the stores are having a big sale of 50 percent off the already marked down merchandise. What do you do? You get excited. The more you look around, the more excited you get. Emotions are rising higher and higher. They begin to move out, and part of the devil’s plan is for you to follow your emotions.

God wants you to use wisdom. Wisdom says wait a little while until the emotions settle down, then check to see if you really believe it’s the right thing to do. The Bible says in Colossians 3:15 to be led by peace in making decisions. Don’t let your emotions make your decisions. A good statement to remember is this: “Wisdom says wait; emotions say hurry.”

An emotional person is defined as: “One easily affected with or stirred by emotion; one who displays emotion; one with a tendency to rely on or place too much value on emotion; one whose conduct is ruled by emotion rather than reason.” Be honest with yourself in this area. If you believe that you’re not managing your emotions, begin to pray and seek God for emotional maturity.

In the past I experienced a lot of ups and downs, or what we call mood swings. This kind of behavior was hard on me, as well as everyone around me. I felt bad about myself. People who are out of control always feel unhappy with themselves. God created us to operate with a free will. We choose what we will do and what we won’t do. There is a God-given desire inside the believer to do the right thing. When we allow our flesh to rule, we know we’re out of control; however, we’re created to operate with the fruit of self-control.

Self-control is a freedom, not a bondage. You’re free to use wisdom, free to obey God, and free to follow the leading of the Spirit. You’re free not to be pushed around by your feelings. You don’t have to do what you feel like doing. You’re free to do what you know is wise.

Self-control will help you feel better about yourself. When I was experiencing so many ups and downs, it also made me physically tired. It takes a lot of energy to go through all kinds of emotional changes. I noticed that as God helped me learn to manage my emotions, I also had more energy. Maybe you should stop and ask the Lord if that’s why you’ve been so tired lately. Do you let your emotions manage you?

My moods were hard on my family too. After I was well on my way to emotional stability, my husband, Dave, revealed a secret. He told me that during the years I was emotionally unstable, while he would be driving down the highway after work at night, he would ponder the thought, I wonder what she will be like tonight? It’s really very sad to imagine a person in that kind of situation. My husband has always been very stable, and it’s very comforting to live with someone you can depend on to be steady and in control all the time. He was very happy for me, and himself also, when I began getting victory in this area. Children also need a stable atmosphere to grow up in. Stability is really an important issue for all of us.

Jesus is referred to as “The Rock.” You can depend on Him to be stable—the same Jesus all the time, always faithful, loyal, true to His Word and mature. He’s not one way one time and another way the next time.

Jeremiah 17:8 and Psalm 1:3 both instruct us to be like trees firmly planted. First Peter 5:8-9teaches us to be well-balanced and temperate (self-controlled) to keep Satan from devouring us. To withstand him, it says to be rooted, established, strong, immovable and determined. Philippians 1:28 tells us to be constantly fearless when Satan comes against us. Psalm 94:13 says God wants to give us power to stay calm in adversity. All of these scriptures are referring to being stable.

I’m going to close with these statements for your consideration:

1. He who lives by emotions lives without principle.

2. We cannot be spiritual (walk in the spirit) and be led by emotions.

3. Emotions won’t go away, but you can learn to manage them.

4. You can have emotions, but you can’t always rely on them.

Make emotional maturity a primary goal in your life!

Finding Your Emotional Balance!!!!!!!!

We all seek emotional balance, but what exactly does that mean?

Image

There’s no 98.6° of the mind, no 130 over 85 for mood pressure. And, although the popularity of drugs like Prozac and Zoloft might lead us to believe that brain neurotransmitters can be mixed like a smart martini (one jigger of serotonin, two of dopamine…), so far no one has come up with a cocktail for happiness. Most of us know, however, what it feels like to be emotionally out of whack. Patience rubbed bald, making the slightest irritation unbearable. No energy to care about anyone else’s difficulties. A shuttered outlook, leaving you increasingly closed to both pleasure and possibility.
It doesn’t take decoding the genome to prove that when you’re feeling good about yourself, your body stays in better shape and your general condition is more resilient. “The people who age best are those who have positive things happening in their lives and positive feelings,” says Norman Rosenthal, MD, a clinical professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine and the author of The Emotional Revolution, which details the latest science of emotions and argues that they profoundly affect your health and survival.Forty to 55 percent of a happy disposition is genetic, studies suggest, but the rest can be learned. It may be helpful to think of emotional balance as mastering a surfboard—honing the ability to take life’s gnarliest waves without wiping out, while catching the good ones and riding them all the way to shore, enjoying every last splash. What it takes to stay on the board will vary for each of us. Outwardly, life delivers different ups and downs; inwardly, there are many styles of maintaining equilibrium.

To dive in, experts suggest first giving yourself an emotional checkup, then practicing a few basic mood-stabilizing techniques, and finally determining, if appropriate, when it’s time to get help. “Some days are tougher than others,” says surgeon Nancy Snyderman, MD, the author of Dr. Nancy Snyderman’s Guide to Good Health, “but if you generally love waking up in the morning, you’re in a good spot. If you’re not, challenge what’s amiss and see how you can fix it.”

Step 1: Emotional Checkup

Sit down with a calendar and ask yourself how you’ve been feeling over the past couple of weeks—depressed, anxious, joyful, angry? Do you seem uncharacteristically blue and lethargic? If yes, can you see a good reason for it? The questions may seem obvious, but if you don’t ask them, Rosenthal says, “it’s easy to shove the problem out of your mind.”

Next check your expectations. The big mistake people make is confusing emotional balance with happiness, says Alice Domar, PhD, director of the Mind/Body Center for Women’s Health at Boston IVF and the author of Self-Nurture. “The huge number of people on Prozac in this country includes many, I think, who were experiencing life’s ups and downs normally but had an expectation of constant happiness,” she says. “A normal life means feeling pretty satisfied with the way things are, having some moments of joy and some moments of sadness and anxiety.”

Image

Step 2: The Keys to BalanceNo matter where you are on your emotional surfboard (even if you’re off it), these mood-steadying strategies make for easier riding.

1. Mind Rx: Taking a break—imaginary or real—can help settle emotions on a bumpy day.

2. Daydream: “When you think about pleasurable things like sex or food, PET scans show different patterns lighting up in your brain than when you think about work or something unpleasant,” says Mehmet Oz, MD, director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

3. Fake it: Research shows that when you put on a smile, even a forced one, your mood often follows. Hold your head high, walk confidently, pretend you’re Serena Williams after winning the Grand Slam.

4. Listen to music: Put on a pair of headphones and let yourself get carried away.

5. Go to a bookstore and just browse. “Look at travel books, photography books,” suggests Byllye Avery, founder of the National Black Women’s Health Project. “Dip into some fiction and let your mind go there.”

6. Run away: Spas are ideal, Snyderman says (when she books herself for a quick getaway, she tells her kids to “call only in an emergency—and homework doesn’t count”). But you can also escape to a friend’s house for the weekend, get in the car and just drive, or take a day to be a tourist in your own town.

Step 3: Do You Need Help?Depression and anxiety, which often occur together, may be pulling you off-kilter, and subtle symptoms can creep up on you without your realizing it.

With mild depression, you might get your work done and perform all your other duties but have trouble mustering enthusiasm for any of it. Getting ready to go to a party often requires a gargantuan effort (although if you can manage that hurdle, you’re capable of having a good time). And when little things go wrong—a train is late, a friend cancels—you can be totally knocked off course.

With mild anxiety, you worry about things that most people don’t: If there are rumors of a management change at the office, you’ll stay up all night thinking about it while everyone else waits for more information before getting worked up. You wish, perhaps, that you were more easygoing—sometimes your fears keep you from trying things.

In both cases, the experts recommend the following:

1. Meditation: A proven treatment for anxiety, and, to a lesser extent, depression, “it lowers blood pressure and heart rate and counteracts the secretion of stress hormones like cortisol,” Oz says. “We use it in the hospital for anxious heart surgery patients and for post-op depression.”

2. Yoga: The mental focus, breathing, and limbering postures combined into one activity work like a multivitamin for inner stability.

3. Reorganization: Look at your daily schedule and sort out what gives you pleasure and what stresses you out. Then think of every way possible to remove the latter from your life.

4. Saint-John’s-Wort: Although a large study funded by the National Institutes of Health recently suggested that this herb has no effect on severely depressed people, more than 20 studies, mostly in Europe, show that the herb helps alleviate mild depression. Christopher Hobbs, a clinical herbalist and consultant to the herb industry who has written 22 books, including Herbal Remedies for Dummies, says the optimal dosage is 300 milligrams three times a day (of a formula with 0.3 percent hypericin), although a small person might try twice a day. He also says it may take four to six weeks to notice any effects. Caution: If you’re on any medication, consult your doctor before trying Saint-John’s-Wort, because it has been shown to interfere with a number of drugs, including some types of chemotherapy and possibly birth control pills.

If none of these strategies make you feel better after six weeks, you may want to consult a mental health professional. Certainly, if you’re having trouble functioning—work is suffering, nothing excites you, you’ve stopped seeing friends, your mind is racing, you can’t even get out of bed—you should go straight for help.

3 Herbs For Anxiety

Chamomile.

Chamomile serves as a mild remedy for anxiety. Commonly packaged as a calming agent in herbal tea products, it is also used to be a gentle resource for settling an upset stomach. Chamomile is most helpful after a long, stressful day that has led to particularly distracting but otherwise temporary feelings of anxiety. Chamomile, much like the packaged version suggests, is ideal to take as a tea.

Passionflower.

Discovered by Spanish explorers in South America in the sixteenth century, passionflower provides a slightly stronger remedy for anxiety than chamomile and as a result is often used for slightly more ambitious medicinal interventions like anxiety disorder. It is commonly believed to not only help anxiety but also to help with insomnia, nervous disorders, and blood-related maladies like hypertension. Like chamomile, passionflower can be taken as a tea and the two are sometimes combined along with other herbs for anxiety-related symptoms.

Kava Kava.

This herb, sometimes just referred to as “kava,” is known by many to be effective as a sedative. It can be used for not only anxiety but even to act as a natural anesthetic. Its preparation can be varied, for it can be consumed as a tea, in pill form, or even by chewing on the plant itself. Given its strength, it is advisable to consult an experienced herbalist or medical practitioner before taking it.

Feelings of anxiety can be distracting if not outright debilitating. Anxiety can compromise our sleep, our functionality, and our overall sense of wellbeing. But addressing this condition doesn’t have to be complicated to get results. With herbal remedies like these, finding greater calm is possible.

Help for the Worries, Anxiety Relief….

Self-Help Strategies for Anxiety Relief

Self-Help for Anxiety Relief

Worrying can be helpful when it spurs you to take action and solve a problem. But if you’re preoccupied with “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios, worry becomes a problem. Unrelenting doubts and fears can be paralyzing. They can sap your emotional energy, send your anxiety levels soaring, and interfere with your daily life. But chronic worrying is a mental habit that can be broken. You can train your brain to stay calm and look at life from a more positive perspective.

Why is it so hard to stop worrying?

Constant worrying takes a heavy toll. It keeps you up at night and makes you tense and edgy during the day. You hate feeling like a nervous wreck. So why is it so difficult to stop worrying?

For most chronic worriers, the anxious thoughts are fueled by the beliefs—both negative and positive—they hold about worrying.

On the negative side, you may believe that your constant worrying is harmful, that it’s going to drive you crazy or affect your physical health. Or you may worry that you’re going to lose all control over your worrying—that it will take over and never stop.

On the positive side, you may believe that your worrying helps you avoid bad things, prevents problems, prepares you for the worst, or leads to solutions.

Negative beliefs, or worrying about worrying, add to your anxiety and keep worry going. But positive beliefs about worrying can be just as damaging. It’s tough to break the worry habit if you believe that your worrying protects you. In order to stop worry and anxiety for good, you must give up your belief that worrying serves a positive purpose. Once you realize that worrying is the problem, not the solution, you can regain control of your worried mind.

Why you keep worrying

You have mixed feelings about your worries. On one hand, your worries are bothering you—you can’t sleep, and you can’t get these pessimistic thoughts out of your head. But there is a way that these worries make sense to you. For example, you think:

  • Maybe I’ll find a solution.
  • I don’t want to overlook anything.
  • If I keep thinking a little longer, maybe I’ll figure it out.
  • I don’t want to be surprised.
  • I want to be responsible.

You have a hard time giving up on your worries because, in a sense, your worries have been working for you.

Worry and anxiety self-help tip #1: Create a worry period

It’s tough to be productive in your daily life when anxiety and worry are dominating your thoughts. But what can you do? If you’re like many chronic worriers, your anxious thoughts feel uncontrollable. You’ve tried lots of things, from distracting yourself, reasoning with your worries, and trying to think positive, but nothing seems to work.

Why trying to stop anxious thoughts doesn’t work

Telling yourself to stop worrying doesn’t work—at least not for long. You can distract yourself or suppress anxious thoughts for a moment, but you can’t banish them for good. In fact, trying to do so often makes them stronger and more persistent.

You can test this out for yourself. Close your eyes and picture a pink elephant. Once you can see the pink elephant in your mind, stop thinking about it. Whatever you do, for the next five minutes, don’t think about pink elephants!

How did you do? Did thoughts of pink elephants keep popping in your brain?

“Thought stopping” backfires because it forces you to pay extra attention to the very thought you want to avoid. You always have to be watching for it, and this very emphasis makes it seem even more important.

But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to control your worry. You just need to try a different approach. This is where the strategy of postponing worrying comes in. Rather than trying to stop or get rid of an anxious thought, give yourself permission to have it, but put off thinking any more about it until later.

Learning to postpone worrying:

  1. Create a “worry period.” Choose a set time and place for worrying. It should be the same every day (e.g. in the living room from 5:00 to 5:20 p.m.) and early enough that it won’t make you anxious right before bedtime. During your worry period, you’re allowed to worry about whatever’s on your mind. The rest of the day, however, is a worry-free zone.
  2. Postpone your worry. If an anxious thought or worry comes into your head during the day, make a brief note of it on paper and postpone it to your worry period. Remind yourself that you’ll have time to think about it later, so there’s no need to worry about it right now. Save it for later and continue to go about your day.
  3. Go over your “worry list” during the worry period. Reflect on the worries you wrote down during the day. If the thoughts are still bothering you, allow yourself to worry about them, but only for the amount of time you’ve specified for your worry period. If the worries don’t seem important any more, cut your worry period short and enjoy the rest of your day.

Postponing worrying is effective because it breaks the habit of dwelling on worries in the present moment. Yet there’s no struggle to suppress the thought or judge it. You simply save it for later. As you develop the ability to postpone your anxious thoughts, you’ll start to realize that you have more control over your worrying than you think.

Worry and anxiety self-help tip #2: Ask yourself if the problem is solvable

Research shows that while you’re worrying, you temporarily feel less anxious. Running over the problem in your head distracts you from your emotions and makes you feel like you’re getting something accomplished. But worrying and problem solving are two very different things.

Problem solving involves evaluating a situation, coming up with concrete steps for dealing with it, and then putting the plan into action. Worrying, on the other hand, rarely leads to solutions. No matter how much time you spend dwelling on worst-case scenarios, you’re no more prepared to deal with them should they actually happen.

Distinguish between solvable and unsolvable worries

If a worry pops into your head, start by asking yourself whether the problem is something you can actually solve. The following questions can help:

  • Is the problem something you’re currently facing, rather than an imaginary what-if?
  • If the problem is an imaginary what-if, how likely is it to happen? Is your concern realistic?
  • Can you do something about the problem or prepare for it, or is it out of your control?

Productive, solvable worries are those you can take action on right away. For example, if you’re worried about your bills, you could call your creditors to see about flexible payment options. Unproductive, unsolvable worries are those for which there is no corresponding action. “What if I get cancer someday?” or “What if my kid gets into an accident?”

If the worry is solvable, start brainstorming. Make a list of all the possible solutions you can think of. Try not to get too hung up on finding the perfect solution. Focus on the things you have the power to change, rather than the circumstances or realities beyond your control. After you’ve evaluated your options, make a plan of action. Once you have a plan and start doing something about the problem, you’ll feel much less worried.

Dealing with unsolvable worries

But what if the worry isn’t something you can solve? If you’re a chronic worrier, the vast majority of your anxious thoughts probably fall in this camp. In such cases, it’s important to tune into your emotions.

As previously mentioned, worrying helps you avoid unpleasant emotions. Worrying keeps you in your head, thinking about how to solve problems rather than allowing yourself to feel the underlying emotions. But you can’t worry your emotions away. While you’re worrying, your feelings are temporarily suppressed, but as soon as you stop, the tension and anxiety bounces back. And then, you start worrying about your feelings, “What’s wrong with me? I shouldn’t feel this way!”

Learn how emotional savvy reduces worry

The only way out of this vicious cycle is by learning to embrace your feelings. This may seem scary at first because of negative beliefs you have about emotions. For example, you may believe that you should always be rational and in control, that your feelings should always make sense, or that you shouldn’t feel certain emotions, such as fear or anger.

The truth is that emotions—like life—are messy. They don’t always make sense and they’re not always pleasant. But as long as you can accept your feelings as part of being human, you’ll be able to experience them without becoming overwhelmed and learn how to use them to your advantage. The following tips will help you find a better balance between your intellect and your emotions.

Worry and anxiety self-help tip #3: Accept uncertainty

The inability to tolerate uncertainty plays a huge role in anxiety and worry. Chronic worriers can’t stand doubt or unpredictability. They need to know with 100 percent certainty what’s going to happen. Worrying is seen as a way to predict what the future has in store—a way to prevent unpleasant surprises and control the outcome. The problem is, it doesn’t work.

Thinking about all the things that could go wrong doesn’t make life any more predictable. You may feel safer when you’re worrying, but it’s just an illusion. Focusing on worst-case scenarios won’t keep bad things from happening. It will only keep you from enjoying the good things you have in the present. So if you want to stop worrying, start by tackling your need for certainty and immediate answers.

Challenging intolerance of uncertainty: The key to anxiety relief

Ask yourself the following questions and write down your responses. See if you can come to an understanding of the disadvantages and problems of being intolerant of uncertainty.

  • Is it possible to be certain about everything in life?
  • What are the advantages of requiring certainty, versus the disadvantages? Or, how is needing certainty in life helpful and unhelpful?
  • Do you tend to predict bad things will happen just because they are uncertain? Is this a reasonable thing to do? What is the likelihood of positive or neutral outcomes?
  • Is it possible to live with the small chance that something negative may happen, given its likelihood is very low?

Worry and anxiety self-help tip #4: Challenge anxious thoughts

If you suffer from chronic anxiety and worries, chances are you look at the world in ways that make it seem more dangerous than it really is. For example, you may overestimate the possibility that things will turn out badly, jump immediately to worst-case scenarios, or treat every negative thought as if it were fact. You may also discredit your own ability to handle life’s problems, assuming you’ll fall apart at the first sign of trouble. These irrational, pessimistic attitudes are known as cognitive distortions.

Although cognitive distortions aren’t based on reality, they’re not easy to give up. Often, they’re part of a lifelong pattern of thinking that’s become so automatic you’re not even completely aware of it. In order to break these bad thinking habits and stop the worry and anxiety they bring, you must retrain your brain.

Start by identifying the frightening thought, being as detailed as possible about what scares or worries you. Then, instead of viewing your thoughts as facts, treat them as hypotheses you’re testing out. As you examine and challenge your worries and fears, you’ll develop a more balanced perspective.
